I Judge Books By Their Covers: "Station Eleven"

Hello, my name is Lindsay, and I judge books by their covers.
Confession: I always judge books by their covers. A book's appearance -- from the artwork to the font to the colors to the texture to the weight and cut of the pages (I like the ragged-edged ones) -- is very important to me. And there are certain kinds of covers I like and certain ones I'd never pick up unless I was already planning to read the book. It's fascinating to see how covers change between editions -- hardcover and paperback, or U.S. and international -- and it's so fun to see who prefers what!

hardcover // paperback

"Station Eleven" was on my mind recently because it made the list of my 10 most recent 5-star reads. When I went on Goodreads to grab the cover art for that post, I noticed the paperback edition is out, and it has a very different cover! (Though a further glance told me that the deer artwork is actually from the U.K. hardback.)

I like both of these covers well enough, so it's a tough choice! But the original hardcover artwork is more intriguing; the beautiful night sky and softly glowing tents grab my attention and make me curious about the story. Of course the deer and flora on the paperback are pretty, but I don't feel that same pull to discover the meaning of the images. Also, I'm not 100% crazy about the orange font. Which cover do you like best? Did you like "Station Eleven"?

My winner: hardcover edition

  1. Loved this book! I've only seen the hardcover edition until now. I'm with you, I definitely prefer it. It seems to hint better at the mystery and magic of the story.

  2. I completely agree with your choice, though I do also like the simple but eye-catching art of the paperback. I really like black-and-white graphics like that!

  3. I definitely like the hardcover cover better. I'm not a fan of the other. (I judge books by their covers too.)

  4. I haven't read the book, but I agree the hardcover draws my curiosity more.
