Monday Musings

IMG_2361

My week: It was a pretty boring week here, but we did get to the beach on Friday afternoon and stayed to see the sunset.

Reading: I finished and enjoyed "The Things We Keep" by Sally Hepworth (review), then breezed through "Sleeping Giants" by Sylvain Neuvel, a science fiction novel I've been dying to read since it came out in April. Told entirely in interviews, journal entries and mission reports, it was different than I expected but still pretty good, and I'm anxious for the story (which deals with the discovery of an ancient alien artifact) to continue in the second book.

Then I finished up a galley of "The Hike" by Drew Magary. I won it in a Goodreads Giveaway and started it back in July (it was released at the beginning of August); I ended up setting it aside because I just couldn't get into it. Reviewers said the ending made it all come together so I decided to finish it up -- and it just did not do it for me. I hated the writing and the plot just seemed utterly pointless.

Now I'm reading an advance e-book copy of "Sirius: The Little Dog Who Almost Changed History," set during WWII and featuring a very intelligent fox terrier. It's cute so far, though the choppy writing is a bit off-putting, maybe because it was translated from German?

Since I can't take my iPad to the beach (too much glare), I also started a library book, "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman, on Friday. It's on my must-read-in-2016 list and I'm excited to finally be getting to it years after I first decided to read it. I've only read the first two chapters but so far I'm totally into the story and Grossman's writing. People say it's like Harry Potter for adults, so I'm fully expecting to love it!

Knitting: ARGH! I finally found the motivation to re-start my Earnest cardigan (I ripped out the entire thing about two weeks ago now) and I have just had one problem after another getting it going again. I'm finally back on track, though, and since Jarrod is working 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. shifts again the next two weeks, I expect to get a ton of knitting done. Pictures to come when I actually have some progress to show!

Watching: I started season 2 of "Grantchester," one of my favorite shows! It's part of Masterpiece Mystery on PBS. Based on a book series, it's set in 1950s England and features the very handsome Sidney Chambers, Cambridge graduate and WWII solider turned vicar in the village of Grantchester -- who also happens to assist the police with detective work. I love the setting and the actors, and I was so happy to see it was renewed for a third season. (P.S. Check out my Top Ten Tuesday list tomorrow for a list of my other favorite TV shows!)

Listening to: One of my favorite bands, Glass Animals, has a new album out!

Eating: I whipped up a loaf of chocolate chip banana bread this week. Yum!

Trying: Sherry. UGH! I bought a bottle for a new recipe and couldn't resist testing out a sip. It was revolting and I have no idea what Professor Trelawney is thinking with her propensity for sherry-drinking. Perhaps someone should introduce her to a nice moscato wine... or a shot of tequila?! (That said, the recipe -- kung pao spaghetti from Damn Delicious -- was yummy!)

Looking forward to: Getting my first pumpkin spice latte (or maybe salted caramel mocha) of the season. If I close my eyes and crank up the A/C while sipping it, maybe I can pretend that I'm in the mountains of Colorado instead of perpetual-summer Hawaii.

I'm linking up with Kathryn at Book Date for It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

  1. As always, thank you for book recommendations! Knitting and ripping definitely go hand in hand! I hope the second attempt will be successful!

    1. Now that I'm back on track, so far so good! I did a lot of knitting today and surpassed the point where I ripped it out -- so that's progress! :)

  2. I had The Magicians on my stack for a while but donated it before I could read it. I'll be waiting to hear your opinion before adding a copy to my Kindle. Come see what I accomplished last week here. Happy reading!

    1. So far I'm enjoying "The Magicians," but I did see that it had some mediocre reviews. I've still got a ways to go, and I'm hoping I end up liking it!

  4. My parents are big sherry fans, but I've never developed a taste for the stuff!

  5. I've been wanting to pick up Sleeping Giants for quite a while now - sci fi isn't my usual reading comfort zone but I liked the premise of this one as well as the unusual story telling format. Glad you enjoyed it.

I read The Magicians a while ago now, and whilst I did quite enjoy the story, I have still yet to move on to any of the other books within the series. I hope you enjoy all your current reads.

Choc chip banana bread - yum yum!

I hope you have a great week :-)

    1. Sci-fi used to be totally out of my comfort zone, but the last year or so I've really gotten much more into sci-fi and fantasy -- though admittedly it's mostly been popular stuff that's well-liked by a lot of different readers. "Sleeping Giants" isn't too hardcore on the sci-fi... I imagine that will come in the future books.

Yes, the banana bread was delish... next up is pumpkin bread (with chocolate chips, of course)!

  7. I read "The Magicians" a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I want to read on in the series, but I think I need to find the time to re-read "The Magicians" first....

  8. I really like The Magicians series. Grossman does such interesting things with world building and story.

I hope your banana bread was delicious. I made strawberry scones this week. Baking is so good for the soul and the stomach! :)

    1. Mmm, strawberry scones sound delicious! I'm looking forward to pumpkin scones being back at Starbucks! I tried to make a copycat recipe a couple years ago, but it was nothing like the real thing.

I'm about 100 pages into "The Magicians" now and still enjoying it. I actually just read the book jacket for the first time, and I was surprised to see that the whole thing doesn't take place at Brakebills. I assumed, a la Harry Potter, that whatever adventures Quentin gets up to would happen during his schooling -- though I did notice his education seemed to be moving along rather fast.

  9. I'm sorry to hear The Hike ended up being lame. That pretty much convinced me not to bother with it. And you'll be so proud of me - I'm cataloging my yarn on Ravelry!! Hyped to start knitting again

    1. Yay for knitting! Boo for "The Hike"! I so desperately wanted to like it, but I just didn't get it. My review came out rather scathing and I need to tone it down a notch before publishing!
