16 Good Movies Based on Books I'll Probably Never Read

This week's topic for Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish blog) is a movie-themed freebie. I LOVE movies but I don't really have that many concrete favorites, so doing a straightforward faves list was out. Instead I decided to put together a list of book-to-movie adaptations that I enjoyed -- but have not, and probably never will, read the books they're based on. In these cases, the movie was good enough for me!

Have you enjoyed any of these movies? Are there any books I should make a point to read?

"War and Peace" is last because, as a TV miniseries, it's a little bit of a cheat -- but it was so good that I couldn't resist giving it some love here!

  1. I love your choice of topics for today. Clever!

I urge you to read True Grit one day. It's amazing.

  2. Forrest Gump is one of my all time favorite movies. I'll probably never read the book and I'm okay with that. :)

    1. Same here. I suspect it's one of those rare times when the movie outdoes the book that inspired it. I mean, it's hard to beat Tom Hanks!

  3. I've heard World War Z in book form is way better than the movie, but I haven't read it neither.

    1. Really! I enjoyed the movie so maybe I'll have to check out the book. I used to totally avoid the zombie thing -- until I finally caught up with the rest of the world and started watching "The Walking Dead"!

  4. I have actually read the first couple of books in the Lincoln Lawyer series and they are really good. I did see Money Ball and Forrest Gump and I probably will not read those either even though the movies were great. Nice list!!

    1. Good to know! I've never read Michael Connelly but a friend recommended the Harry Bosch series and I'd like to give him a try one day!

  5. You have a lot of good movies on here but the only one I read the books for was Forest Gump. I really liked The Lincoln Lawyer and World War Z. I've considered reading that book, but like you, I think the movie was fine. I hear they are making a sequel though. I also really enjoyed The Freedom Writers movie. Nice list!

    1. What did you think of Forrest Gump? When I first found out it was based on a book (only when I started working at the library) I considered reading it but never got around to it.

  7. I LOVE Pearl Harbor! There are a lot of great movies like it that are based off books, but I can't see myself ever wanting to read them! Great Top Ten :D My Top Ten Tuesday!

    1. That's how I feel -- if I haven't read the book before seeing the movie, I usually don't feel the need to. One reason is that it sorta takes the imagination aspect out of reading, since I just picture the characters and setting from the film.

  9. Great idea for a list! I definitely agree with several of these: Brokeback Mountain, Chocolat, True Grit, Forrest Gump...I honestly can't remember if I've watched World War Z or not but I couldn't get through the book. I did read War and Peace but it's completely understandable that you'd want to pass on that one :)

    1. I never really had much interest in reading "War and Peace" until I saw the miniseries. Now I'm intrigued by the idea of reading it but I worry it might seem dull compared to the Hollywood-ized 21st-century version. Plus it's soooo long! Maybe one day.

The movie of "World War Z" was pretty good! Definitely not film of the year, but worth a watch.

  10. I love this list! I have seen most of these movies and didn't/ don't plan on reading the books either. I have read Freedom writer's Diary and World War Z- I definitely prefer the World War Z book to the movie.

    1. That's what someone else said about "World War Z." I'll keep the book in mind next time I'm craving some zombies in my life.

  11. Chocolat the book is wonderful! I actually liked it much better than the movie, myself. It's definitely worth a try!

    1. Good to know! It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, so if I read the book now I wouldn't spend the whole time comparing the two.

  12. Brokeback Mountain is only a short story, and a really good one at that, so I'd recommend it! V for Vendetta is also excellent in (graphic) novel format. Typing that has actually made me want to reread it :D

    1. Thanks for your input! The only graphic novels I've read are the Saga series and I'd like to expand my horizons, so I'll keep "V for Vendetta" in mind!
