Monday Musings: Happy 4th of July!

IMG_2022

Highlight of the week: The movers delivered our household goods on Friday! It was like Christmas morning opening up boxes of stuff we haven't seen in three months... and sleeping in our own bed and sitting on our own couch and vacuuming these filthy floors! Of course there were plenty of unpleasant surprises unpacking -- there always are -- but I'm so glad that we can finally home-ify this house!

I know it's unkind to make fun of people's spelling errors, but this just cracks me up. And in my defense, the packers messed up a bunch of my picture frames, so...

Reading: I read "Written in Red" by Anne Bishop, a delectable urban fantasy novel (review to come -- I loved it!), and then started "N0S4A2" by Joe Hill, a book I've been meaning to read for ages. I haven't had much time to read the past couple days so I'm not very far in, but I'm expecting to enjoy it. So far it's just kinda weird -- and it seems so dauntingly long!

Watching: The BBC three-part miniseries "Daniel Deronda" based on the book by George Eliot.

Also watching: Our kitty cat, Lily, sitting in the window watchfully eyeing the mongoose that's scampering around our backyard. We have two frequent mongoose visitors and I've named them Neville and Luna.

Listening to: "Drink You Away" by Justin Timberlake.

Eating: Fresh Maui Gold pineapple.

Buying: Sod, curtains for four rooms, patio lights, a patio rug, plants (including a poor 50-cent tiny coleus that I'm going to try to nurse back to health), a new throw blanket for the couch, a shower curtain rod, a towel holder, a really cool handmade "ALOHA" sign... you get the idea. I also ordered a two-sided wreath holder so I can hang a wreath on both the inside and the outside of the front door.

Looking forward to: Tonight we'll take a break from unpacking and head over to Pearl Harbor for the Three Days Grace concert and fireworks. And of course I'm looking forward to getting the house put together this week!

    1. I'm trying to read Joe Hill's "N024A2" right now in spurts between unpacking and I think what I REALLY want to be reading is book 2 of The Others!

  3. Thanks for the round up. The Anne Bishop has been on my TBR shelf for a while! I'm glad to see that you loved it which is urging me to go ahead and pick it up soon!

Have a look at my weekly wrap up here.

    1. You should definitely try "Written in Red"! It had been on my TBR for ages too, and I only added it after seeing it on blogs time and time again. I'm SO glad I finally decided to grab it at the library! The writing could be a tad sharper, but the story is completely enthralling!

  4. Moving is stressful...but it can also be fun, with the opportunity to reinvent your space. If you allow yourself to go with the fun of it, you can alleviate the stress.

I haven't always managed that completely...but there have been some moves when I did. What a difference!

Enjoy! Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    1. I completely agree! Moving every couple of years, we have to keep a positive attitude about it. And you're right -- it IS fun to switch things around and re-decorate and get everything set up again.

  5. Enjoy setting up house. I hope you are able to get through Joe Hill's book, it seems to be a 50/50.

    1. I actually haven't really read in a couple days! I'm thinking I may need to put it down for now and start something a little lighter and more immediately engrossing.

  6. Hope you get settled into your new home and enjoy your books this week. Written In Red looks like a good one. Hope you enjoy your new place and week.

    1. Thanks, Stacey! "Written in Red" was such a fun read! We're slowly but surely getting the house put together. I unpacked all my books tonight!

  7. I hope you make a lot of progress getting settled in this week! I hope we see pictures once you get everything in place. :)

    1. Definitely! I'm going to want to share all this hard work we've been doing, especially out back. We have a teeny tiny backyard with NO grass to speak of, so we put sod down this weekend. Once we get our patio set up and buy some plants, it'll be a complete transformation!

  8. Neville and Luna the mongoose! I love that!

    1. I just couldn't resist! The mongoose/mongooses/mongeese(?) that live in Hawaii are not particularly cute and they're kind of weasel-like so I probably should've gone with Slytherin names -- especially since Draco gets turned into a ferret, which looks kind of like a mongoose -- but oh well!

  9. Good luck settling in! We just moved a month ago and still are puttering around unpacking a few boxes, straightening up the garage but mostly looking for those elusive items that just can't seem to be found, though we know we packed them :)

Your cat must be happy to be living with you again and is enjoying the live show outside her window!

I haven't read Written in Red or any by Anne Bishop, but she sure seems to be popular lately. Enjoy!

    1. Thanks, Rita! Good luck with the rest of your unpacking. We've been working our butts off the last few days but we're starting to slow down and tire out. There's only so much you can do at one time before it just becomes exhausting!

You should try "Written in Red"! It's not something I would've picked up without the recommendation of other bloggers, but I'm so glad I did.

  10. Yay! I'm so excited that all of your things finally arrived. I hope that everything irreplaceable survived the move! Don't even feel bad about "world glob," that's hilarious.

Man, Joe Hill has just been the theme of my life lately. I've been reading his comic series Locke & Key because I can't focus on anything else for the life of me, and I'm LOVING it. I know that more of his work is in my future... I've been seeing lots of good reviews for The Fireman in particular.

Enjoy your nesting and have a great week! :)

    1. Thanks, Shaina! Mostly everything irreplaceable survived... though I unpacked my books tonight and I'm sad to say the person who packed them (probably the poor speller -- honestly, some of the boxes had such bad misspellings that the Hawaii movers commented on it!) is definitely not a reader and has no appreciation for books. There were a few that were completely ruined, including a brand spankin' new copy of "Morning Star" by Pierce Brown (sob!).

I'm going through a Joe Hill phase too, apparently. I have "The Fireman" ready to pick up at the library! The only other book of his I've read is "Horns." Maybe I need to check out "Locke & Key"!

  11. Have fun settling in! Sorry about the unpleasant surprises, though.

I've been wanting to read both those books for a while :D Ugh I need more hours in a day >.<

    Oh my god, it's Monday!

    1. Yes, there were some eye-rolling, sigh-inducing surprises, and then there were some really sad ones like destroyed books (sob!). I've learned, though, that broken stuff is just something that happens when other people pack your things. :(

Both "Written in Red" and "N0S4A2" were on my must-read-in-2016 list -- because they've been on my TBR forever!

  12. I'm so glad you enjoyed Written in Red. The whole series so far is wonderful. I think one was somewhat weaker than the others, but I still gave them all 5/5. Sorry about your frames.

    1. I loved it! I gave it 4.5 stars because I thought the writing could've been a little stronger -- I wanted to hand her a thesaurus! -- but the plot and setting were just completely engrossing! I'm going to read book 2 soon.
