My week: My mom is here for a visit! We had a wonderful week -- we went souvenir shopping, to our favorite beach, to the North Shore where we hunted for sea glass and watched the huge waves at the Banzai Pipeline, and over the weekend we went to Kauai. We stayed at our favorite military beach cottages on the far west side of the island and saw two gorgeous sunsets, took long walks on the beach and read under our beach umbrella. Kauai is Jarrod's and my favorite of the Hawaiian islands and I know my mom enjoyed it too. I'll post more pictures from our trip soon.
Reading: I didn't do much reading at all last week between getting ready for my mom to come, sightseeing and heading to Kauai, but thanks to our flights and some reading time on the beach, I'm almost done with "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier You'd never guess from the writing that it was penned way back in 1938, though it is a little different than I expected it to be -- not as creepy or suspenseful. I picked up five library holds last week so I have plenty more books to keep me busy. Gotta get "Rebecca" done soon! Up next: "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton. (P.S. I get my bookishness from my mom, and right now she's reading "Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead.)
Eating: Waaaaay too much! I made another batch of pumpkin cinnamon rolls for my mom, and we ate out a ton last week. We devoured a chocolate-haupia (coconut pudding) pie, got ice cream twice, and took my mom to a few of our favorite restaurants. This week we'll be eating light!
Buying: Postcards galore! And a pineapple Christmas ornament. And a wooden mobile made out of driftwood and wooden turtles.

Sounds perfect - I hope you have enjoyed the time with your Mum. It's nice to hear you both enjoy book-ish pursuits!
ReplyDeleteI have seen The Other Einstein around, four stars is worth a read! The Bright Edge of the World also sounds like I should be looking it up to read soon.
Rebecca is one of my favourite novels, so atmospheric. Kate Morton is also one of my favourite authors, The Forgotten Garden is my second favourite of hers, I still love her first novel, The Shifting Fog the most.
Have a lovely week!

Ah ha! I had to look up "The Shifting Fog" because I didn't even know it existed, and it turns out it's a different tile for "The House at Riverton." That and "The Distant Hours" will be my only Kate Morton reads left now -- and I'm excited to be caught up. I love her work! :)
DeleteYes, I definitely recommend both "The Other Einstein" and "To the Bright Edge of the World." I've been so lucky to have an awesome couple months of reading lately!
Sounds like you are having a great visit and really enjoying yourselves. I got my reading "bug" from my Mom as well!
ReplyDeleteI love talking books with my mom! Our reading tastes don't always overlap, but it's so much fun when they do. I'm looking forward to talking about "The Underground Railroad" with my mom whenever it comes in for me at the library. Most recently I read "All the Light We Cannot See," which she had already read and loved, and it was such a pleasure to chat about it.
DeleteIt is great that you can spend time with your mom. You really make me miss mine. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteSounds like your having a great time with your Mum. My mum was responsible for my love of reading too.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Rebecca, but my favourite Daphne du Maurier book is Jamaica Inn.
The Forgotten Garden was my first Kate Morton. I've since gone on to read all her others books. Enjoy the rest of your week!
Thanks, Yvonne! I'm hoping to get caught up on Kate Morton's books soon too. I follow her on Instagram and I love the little hints she drops about what she's working on!
