My Fall 2016 Reading List

fall reading list
(This picture is from our trip to Rocky Mountain National Park last September, and I so wish I were back there right now!)

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
I've been planning to read this gothic tale forever, and for some reason I had it in my head that I should read it in October. Of course, now I'm in Hawaii which feels like summer all year long, but I am finally going to read this book this fall, proper atmosphere or not!

Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I've decided it's time to jump on the Taylor Jenkins Reid bandwagon, and I've got this one on hold at the library.

To Capture What We Cannot Keep by Beatrice Colin
I've got an advance copy from NetGalley of this historical fiction story set in 1880s Paris during the construction of the Eiffel Tower. It comes out in November.

The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman
I read the first book in the Invisible Library series last month and it was so much fun! I'm looking forward to continuing the story.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
I've been meaning to read this for years, ever since I read and loved "The Secret Keeper" way back at the beginning of 2013. "The Forgotten Garden" is on my must-read-in-2016 list and time is running out! I feel like fall is the perfect time for Kate Morton's novels, which are always set in the English countryside and always involve long-buried secrets!

To The Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey
How gorgeous is this cover?! I love reading books set in Alaska and this one sounds amazing!

Vicious by V.E. Schwab
"Vicious" is another book on my must-read-in-2016 list. I enjoy Schwab's Shades of Magic series and I'm fully expecting to love this story.

The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst
I've been reading more and more fantasy lately and this new novel sounds so good! The intriguing cover is what got me to look it up in the first place. I just want to step right into it!

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
This was a gift from my Broke and Bookish Secret Santa last year (I'm so excited to participate again this year!) and I'm ashamed to say I still haven't read it. It's another entry on my must-read-in-2016 list.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
This one's no surprise -- it's the book of the moment! I've wanted to read it ever since I first saw the blurb months ago, though. Now I've just got to wait to get to the top of the library holds queue!

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
I wasn't familiar with Towles until recently, when the hype began for his new release. Intrigued, I looked him up and added his first book, "Rules of Civility" to my to-read list. But I've heard so many great things about this book, and I've been wanting to read more fiction set in Russia after watching the BBC "War & Peace" miniseries, so I'm moving this one up the list!

The Likeness by Tana French
I read the first book in French's Dublin Murder Squad series, "In the Woods" just about a year ago now and I've been intending to continue the series ever since. A friend even sent me a copy of "The Likeness," so I have no excuse for not reading it sooner!

The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore
I'm so excited to read this new-ish book about the invention of the light bulb -- which sounds rather dull but this book promises to be anything but! Moore was the screenwriter for the amazing movie "The Imitation Game" and I'm sure I'll enjoy this novel.

Left over from my spring and summer reading lists:
I currently have three of these ("American Housewife," "The Royal We" and "His Majesty's Dragon") checked out from the library, so I'll at least be getting those knocked out soon, and I'll happily read "Saga" whenever my library finally gets it.

  1. I have Saga Vol. 6 and can't believe I still haven't read it. Guess I better do that before I have to take it back to the library. I have The Masked City on my list as well and am also interested in The Queen of Blood. Good luck getting to all of these!

    1. And I can't believe my library still doesn't even HAVE the new "Saga"! Honestly!

Thanks -- I will probably need a little luck. You can see how many books I've got left over from my spring and summer lists -- they just keep piling up! Though I definitely want to read every single book on this list and I WILL get to them all eventually! :)

  2. Great list! Anything by Kate Morton is a winner. I also recently added Rebecca to my TBR - for some reason I am seeing it everywhere these days, so I figured I should check it out!

    1. Agreed! This'll only be my third Kate Morton book, but I'm slowly working my way through all of them. I think I'll have two more to read after this. Are you on Instagram? If so, she has a wonderful account full of gorgeous pictures of English cottages and such.

    2. I don't have Instagram, but once in awhile I will check out her account - she will sometimes drop little hints about her next book!

  3. Wow, that is a long list!!! Looking forward to reading your reviews once you are done with them!

    1. Oh, I know. Perhaps a little overambitious, but since I'm still not working yet I should have plenty of free time to read! :)

  4. Rebecca was my favorite book that I read in high school, so I really hope you enjoy it. The Royal We is one that I still need to read as well. I hope you enjoy all of these!

    1. "The Royal We" is surprisingly good! I'm a little over halfway done now, after staying up WAY too late last night reading!

  5. I also got To Capture What We Cannot Keep from NetGalley. I hope it's good. Both Maybe in Another Life and Rebecca are really good. Enjoy!

    1. I requested it a few months ago because I was powerless to resist that gorgeous cover! I see it now has a few iffy reviews on Goodreads, but I'm still excited to read it.

  6. I really enjoyed Maybe In Another Life and The Likeness. I still need to get to Finders Keepers myself at some point. The Royal We is another I want to check out. Great list and hope you get to them all - enjoy!

    1. I'm reading "The Royal We" right now and liking it way more than I expected. I really think it would be right up your alley too!

  7. Rebecca is moving near to the top of my TBR as well! You're right, it totally feels like the kind of thing one should read when the wind is howling bitterly outside

    1. Oh, totally -- and it's too bad I didn't read it last year when we were in Ohio. There is definitely no bitter, howling wind to be had in Hawaii. In all likelihood, it'll be going to the beach with me!

  8. I really enjoyed Rebecca in high school; I should reread it sometime. I also need to get around to reading another Kate Morton book!

    1. It seems like a lot of people read "Rebecca" in high school, but it definitely wasn't required reading at my school. Maybe that's for the best, though... I think some of the books I did read in high school would've been better appreciated at a later age. What Kate Morton books have you read? I highly recommend "The Secret Keeper"!

  9. What a great list! The Masked City is on my list today. I need to give Kate Morton a try, and that Graham Moore book is definitely going on my Goodreads want-to-read list. And I hope you love His Majesty's Dragon as much as I did!

    1. I can't believe you haven't read Kate Morton! I'm pretty sure you'll like her. People seem to love "The Forgotten Garden," and I adored "The Secret Keeper," so I'd start with one of those.

I LOVED "His Majesty's Dragon" -- I finished it yesterday. Have you read the whole series? I can't wait to get to the second book!

    2. Thanks for the advice!

I've read most of the Temeraire series. I think I'm two or three behind at this point. The one set in Australia doesn't quite reach the high bar set by the others; it's good but not fantastic. I need to track down the audiobooks after that one.

  10. I need to read Vicious at some point!

  11. To Capture What We Cannot Keep is on my list as well! I'm hoping to get to the ARC next on my list- it looks like a good read. Hope you like it! Good luck with your Fall TBR!

    1. Thanks, Katie! When I was putting this list together I didn't even remember what "To Capture" was about and had to go back and read the blurb; I don't think I even paid that much attention when I was requesting it. Between the gorgeous cover and the fact that it's Paris historical fiction, it was a done deal for me! I hope we both enjoy it! :)

  12. Rebecca is on my must read list. I am not sure I'll get to it this year, but hopefully next. I hope you enjoy The Masked City, Lindsay! I'm really enjoying the series. I've heard such good things about Vicious and Life After Life. I hope you are able to read all of these at some point! Great list, Lindsay.

    1. I'm definitely looking forward to journeying back to the Invisible Library! Like a lot of the books on my list, the series is a perfect fall/winter read.

  13. I loved Rebecca, loved A Gentleman in Moscow, and loved The Likeness! I still haven't read anything by Kate Morton, but several people suggested beginning with The Forgotten Garden so I will be looking forward to your thoughts on that book.

    1. Kate Morton is definitely one of my favorite authors, even though I've only read two of her books so far. I can't imagine a bad one! I'm fully expecting to enjoy "The Forgotten Garden," but my introduction to Kate was "The Secret Keeper" and I highly recommend it! It was one of my favorite reads of 2013.
