Top Ten (+) Upcoming Book-to-Movie Adaptations

This week's Top Ten Tuesday prompt at The Broke and the Bookish is the top ten books you'd like to see turned into movies (in a perfect world, of course, where they wouldn't butcher our beloved tomes). I decided to go in a slightly different direction, since seemingly every book I've read in the past two years is already being made into a movie.

Below are the top ten adaptations I'm most looking forward to, plus a list of the other books I've read recently that will be coming to the big screen:

(All images from Goodreads.)

I can't wait for installment two of the Hunger Games franchise, "Catching Fire," which will be out November 22.

Another YA dystopian favorite, "Divergent," comes to theaters March 21, 2014, and stars Shailene Woodley as main character Beatrice. I'm also looking forward to the release of last book in the Divergent trilogy, which comes out this October ("Allegiant").

"The Night Circus" film rights have been purchased by Summit Entertainment.

Historical fiction/time travel page-turner "Outlander" will be a series on Starz next year.

YA Holocaust novel "The Book Thief" hits theaters November 15.

Much-hyped "Ender's Game" comes out November 1 and features big names such as Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Hailee Steinfeld and Ben Kingsley.

"A Discovery of Witches," my favorite book of 2012, hasn't started filming yet and has no foreseen release date, but the film rights have been purchased by Warner Bros.

Last year's dark and haunting bestseller "Gone Girl" is set for release in 2015. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike will star as Nick and Amy.

I enjoyed reading "The Light Between Oceans," the film rights of which have been purchased by DreamWorks.

Disney has purchased the rights to bring YA dystopian trilogy "Matched" to the big screen.

Other books I've read recently that will be made into movies:

-The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker: Catherine Hardwicke is set to direct this end-of-the-world/coming-of-age novel.

-The Maze Runner by James Dashner: The first installment of this post-apocalyptic YA series hits theaters February 14, 2014.

-The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: This popular hard-hitting YA novel comes to theaters next year. It stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Eglort as Augustus.

-The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown: This Robert Langdon novel seemed like it was written specifically to be easily transferable to the big screen. However, it looks like movie version of "The Lost Symbol" will take a back seat to the filming of latest novel, "Inferno." (Which, sadly, I didn't like nearly as much as "The Lost Symbol.")

-Austenland by Shannon Hale: This story of a modern-day Regency retreat stars Keri Russell. The book was cute but a bit cheesy, and the movie could go either way. It comes out later this month.

-The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare: I didn't love this first book in the supernatural YA series enough to read the rest, but I'll definitely get the movie on Netflix. It's in theaters now.

-Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan: I've read and enjoyed all the Greek mythology-themed Percy Jackson books, but the first movie ("The Lightning Thief") was absolutely horrible. This one looks better, but not good enough to spend $8 on at the theater.

Books on my to-read list that have been optioned for film:

-Wild by Cheryl Strayed: Reese Witherspoon is set to star in the movie adaptation of this memoir.

-Olive Kitteredge by Elizabeth Strout: This will be an HBO miniseries next year.

-Wolf Hall and Bringing Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel: These historical novels will become a BBC/HBO miniseries.

  1. I didn't realize The Night Circus got picked up. That will be amazing. I can't wait to watch Gone Girl, Catching Fire, Divergent and Ender's Game. Great list!

  2. Yes! So, so, so many books are being made into movies that it's going to be fabulous! The 4 books you mentioned that I don't have on my list are because I haven't read them yet, lol. I have a whole stack of books that I need to read before the movies come out - and all of them are on my list. Indeed, we have *very* similar tastes. :)

  3. So many books to read. Looking forward to seeing all the movies even if I don't get a chance. To read them first.
