Monday Musings

IMG_2084

Highlight of the week: Every other year, Hawaii hosts a huge military exercise called RIMPAC, with 26 other nations participating. It's going on right now, and yesterday several Navy ships were open for military and their families to tour. The picture above is from the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. Most people never get to see an F-18 at all, much less touch one! It was a fun day!

We're also chugging away at unpacking and organizing and getting the house put together. We've made tons of progress but we're both starting to slow down... once all the easy stuff is put away it starts to lose its fun! I have been enjoying setting up the room that's officially called a study and unofficially called Lindsay's Reading Room. It has sort of a nature-y (non-beachy, since that's the rest of our house) theme going on, and I bought the most lovely, bright, cheerful bird curtains from Pier 1, which we got hung up Saturday night.

Reading: I'm a little over halfway through "NOS4A2" by Joe Hill. Very rarely does it take me this long to read a book, but I've been so busy unpacking. And also, it's long -- nearly 700 pages! It took me a while to get into, but now it's hard to put down. Next up is an advance-reading copy of a book that comes out tomorrow (I'm a little behind!): "Everything I Don't Remember" by Jonas Hassen Khemiri.

Watching: We didn't have much time for TV-watching this week either, but we did catch up on a couple more season 6 "Game of Thrones" episodes. And I finished watching the three-part BBC miniseries "Daniel Deronda," based on the novel by George Eliot. We have the Benghazi movie "13 Hours" to watch next.

Listening to: Hyperparadise by Flume.

Baking: Quadruple-berry pie with blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. Soooo good!

Buying: I'm in a decorating frenzy right now, and I decided I just had to have a little boxwood wreath -- and Target just so happened to have them on sale on their website! I recently saw a trick about hanging a wreath with ribbon or burlap by sticking thumbtacks into the top of the door, and I'm thinking I might do that with the door of the guest room.

Looking forward to: Being completely done with unpacking! Maybe this time next week?

Not looking forward to: The blood test I have to go get this week. Please explain to me how someone can be so thrilled to get a tattoo but absolutely stomach-roiling terrified of a blood test!?!?! Sigh.

  1. Good luck with the blood test and the unpacking. The military exercise looks interesting. This week was an air show here with lots of loud airplanes flying over my house. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    1. Thanks, Kathy! I had the blood test this morning and I survived, though I was irrationally terrified the whole time! RIMPAC is pretty cool; seeing so many ships and military uniforms from other countries and hearing foreign accents is always neat!

  2. I hate blood tests too! I put them off as long as possible...lol.

Decorating is one of my passions, and moving makes it possible to reinvent your space. I've lived here nine years now, so I rearrange my stuff a lot.

Someday I plan to read Joe Hill. Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    1. I survived my blood test -- yay! And then I treated myself to a delicious raspberry mocha. :) I'm actually on a Joe Hill roll... I finished "NOS4A2" the other day and then "The Fireman" came in for me at the library!

    1. Oh, Lori, it is SO good. Here's the recipe if you're interested: http://www.rachaelraymag.com/recipes/rachael-ray-magazine-recipe-search/dessert-recipes/rustic-tri-berry-pie

I just use a pre-made Pillsbury pie crust and do a lattice top. (One of these days I'll actually try making my own pie crust! I just hate rolling things out with a rolling pin; not my forte.) And sometimes I use blackberries AND raspberries, to make it quadruple berry.

  4. Aw maybe its because the tattoo is something you actually want and blood tests are not? Blood tests are kind of scary. :( I always have to look while they do that, it helps me. :)

Your Reading Room sounds awesome- bird curtains! Yay!

    1. Oh, for sure -- I wanted the tattoo, I definitely did not want the blood test. The funny thing is that I KNOW I'm being irrationally paranoid about needles and I just can't seem to help myself. And for the record, the blood test (which I hauled myself in for this morning in an anxiety-ridden terror) was almost painless, whereas my most recent tattoo was ridiculously painful! (Though of course I'm already dreaming about another tattoo.) I think part of the difference for me is that the tattoo needle doesn't really go that far into your skin? I don't know. (Mental eye roll at my own nonsensical brain!)

I am SO in love with the bird curtains! They're so colorful and happy and they make me smile! Once the room is all put together (it's a bit of a dumping ground for other random junk at the moment) I'll put some pictures up on the blog!

  5. My husband and I moved in May and we are definitely still in that same unpacking lull. Our downstairs where looks pretty good, but our upstairs still has lots of boxes and work to do! We're hoping once we get the new furniture that we want and all that, then we'll get our mojo back and finish up the rest!

    1. Good luck with the rest of unpacking! We've made pretty good progress -- it helps that I'm not working yet -- but a lot of the stuff left is random things that I'm not really sure what to do with! If it were up to me, a lot of it would be headed to the donate pile, but my dear husband is a little bit of a pack rat!
