Yarn Along: "Black Rabbit Hall" and Cap Sleeve Lattice Top

Yarn Along is a wonderful weekly link-up hosted by the Small Things blog about two of the best things in life, reading and knitting.

I'm so excited to be writing my first Yarn Along post in two months! Jarrod and I are in the process of moving from Ohio to Hawaii -- with a month-long pit-stop at my parents' in Colorado for me while Jarrod takes a class -- and between move preparations, selling our house and getting to Colorado, there wasn't any time for knitting. I had planned to pick out a short-sleeve sweater pattern once I got here, but I couldn't settle on a pattern or a yarn. Finally I landed on one and ordered some yarn, and it's such a relief to be knitting again!

Reading: I've only got a couple pages left of "A Gathering of Shadows," book two in V. E. Schwab's Shades of Magic trilogy. I enjoyed the first book, but I liked this one even better despite the fact that it's less action-heavy. I got a much greater sense of the world our characters inhabit (magical, beautiful Red London, one of four parallel universe Londons with varying degrees of magic). Later today I'll start "Black Rabbit Hall," a gothic British tale I've been looking forward to. (But it's been so long since I requested it from the library -- my parents' library, that is -- that I barely remember what it's about! Sometimes that's the best kind of reading, though.)

Knitting: The Cap Sleeve Lattice Top by Purl Soho, knit in Knit Picks Comfy. I've only worked with cotton yarn once before, but I thought it would be best for Hawaii; wool isn't exactly the fiber of choice when it's in the 80s every day. The body of the sweater will be navy blue and the cream yarn is for the lace pattern on the chest and shoulders. It's coming along well so far; since this part is just straight stockinette stitch it's perfect TV knitting. I'm a little nervous because this'll be my first experience with mattress stitch. Every time I've had to seam something in the past I just winged it (and hated every second), but now I'll finally have to buckle down and learn the professional method of sewing knitted pieces together. Eek!

  1. I am glad you are knitting again, Lindsay. I know you must be so busy, not to mention probably feeling a little out of sorts as you find your footing in this in-between state.I am glad you are enjoying the second book in Schwab's trilogy. It's one I would like to eventually try. I'm also eager to read Black Rabbit Hall. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Wendy! It's crazy to think I've been in Colorado for a month now! Jarrod's class gets over this week and he'll be heading here this weekend. And then we leave for Hawaii the last week in May. It's funny -- I'm finally feeling in a groove here and everything is about to change again. Isn't that the way it always goes? ;) But I'm also starting to get a little anxious to get to Hawaii and start the house-hunting process. After over a month of sleeping in other peoples' and hotel beds, I'm ready to sleep in my own again!

  2. Congratulations on your current and upcoming moves! And on having time to knit again. It always feels so good to get back to knitting after a stint away from it! It drove me nuts last fall when my wrist was recovering from an RSI, and I couldn't knit much. It's doing much better now, and I have two scarves on the needles---a mindless one for TV watching, and the most challenging lace pattern I've yet attempted (which isn't actually very difficult, it just involves a lot of counting and keeping track.)

I really need to read the V. E. Schwab books. My daughter has been raving about them!

    1. I love the challenge and complexity of lace knitting, but I also like being able to talk or watch TV while working on a project! Good luck with your current knits.

Yes, check out the series! I think you'll like it. :)

  4. Hawaii! How exciting!

I've heard good things about the Schwab series and actually have it sitting on my shelf. I really should get around to reading it one of these days...
