14 Gorgeous Book Covers On My To-Read List

This week's Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie-ish visual theme, and I decided to take it in one of my favorite directions: book covers! As I was debating over what kind of list to make, I started thinking about all the beautiful books I've added to my to-read list lately. (I finally got caught up on looking at some pre-pub emails and my TBR sorta exploded. And yes, I totally judge books by their covers.)

These are all books I've added to my to-read list in the last six months or so; some have been out for a years and some don't come out for a few more months, but they all have covers that are right up my alley -- just looking at all these beauties makes me feel happy! As you can see, I have an affinity for covers with bright colors and illustrations as opposed to realistic graphics or photos.

Do you share my taste in cover art?

  1. I love book covers!! I can't believe I didn't think to do that as a Top Ten today. I love bright colors too so Big Magic is one I love. The Enchanted Island and the Essex Serpent are beautiful! Lovely list!

    1. Thanks, Grace! Yeah, I keep SAYING I'm going to read more graphic novels but never do, and I don't know how I could possibly pick favorite picture books (ALL of them?!). I actually had this scheduled as my freebie post last week and then at the last minute I had the revelation that it would work great for "visual" week. :)

  2. I love the cover of Bleaker House and How to Be Human. They are both awesome. I am totally a cover reader which may be bad but I've stumbled on some pretty awesome books that way. Nice list!

    1. I am such a shallow reader -- I'm all about the covers. I'm sure I've missed out on some books because of it, but, like you, I've also discovered some hidden gems that I'd never even heard of simply because the covers drew my attention.

    1. Thanks, Kaylee! I'm a little obsessed with book covers. And I'm always fascinated, too, by the fact that one I love will totally not appeal to a different reader and vice versa.

  5. Great list! I've been talking about reading The Snow Child forever now... I just need to read it! Haha I just checked out a copy of The Little Book of Hygge! Such a cute cover, but kind of a disappointment. You might be interested in Scandinavian Comfort Food by Trine Hahnemann - she has a great discussion on hygge!

    1. Thanks, Julia! For some reason, "The Snow Child" didn't really catch my attention when it was released, but last year I read and LOVED Ivey's new book, "To the Bright Edge of the World." It was one of my favorites of the year, so of course now I have to read her debut!

I'll check out the book you mentioned! I'm fairly new to the whole hygge thing (in fact, when I was putting the post together it occurred to me that I had most likely been pronouncing the word completely wrong in my head, and indeed I was) but I do love the idea of fostering coziness!

  6. The cover of Borne (and the buzz around his previous novels, which I sadly have yet to read) has me super intrigued! And the cover of The Essex Serpent is gorgeous!

    1. I haven't read any of Vandermeer's books yet but I'm going to try to make a point to read "Borne"!

Interestingly, that's the U.K. cover of "The Essex Serpent." The U.S. cover looks exactly the same except the background is green, and it just doesn't appeal to me as much! I always wonder why on earth they change little details like that between editions.

  7. Some gorgeous covers!
I did not do a list today for myself, I asked my daughter if she wanted to help and list her favorite books!
I never read a comic book.So The only ones I read were the VA and Percy Jackson graphic novels. But we did something a little different. Allyson added some comics she read on her list.

  8. All of these are so gorgeous! I've been seeing Hygge around a lot and I'm intrigued! I want to read both of Eowyn Ivey's books. I'm going to check out some of the others too.

    1. I keep seeing hygge everywhere too and finally decided I needed to read more about it!

Definitely check out Ivey's "To the Bright Edge of the World"! It was one of my favorite books of 2016 -- and it's what encouraged me to add "The Snow Child" to my TBR.

    1. Good to know! For some reason I was a little put off by the subtitle and didn't give it much of a glance when it first came out, but I recently read a review that made me add it to my TBR. Glad you liked it! :)

  10. I already wanted to read The Little Book of Hygge and I hadn't even seen the cover, but NOW I am dying to get hold of it right away! Totally in love with everything from Unseen City to The Essex Serpent. They are all along the lines of Idaho by Emily Ruskovich, which I want to read based entirely on the cover.

    1. "Idaho" does have a really cool cover -- I'm waiting to read some more reviews before I add it to my TBR, though.

It would be an extremely tough choice, but I think if I had to pick a favorite cover from my list it might be "Unseen City." It's got the bright colors that I like, but it also has so many fun little details!

  11. I love all the covers you've shared - full of vibrant colours and eye catching designs. That cover of The Snow Child is new to me, as is the cover for The Essex Serpent (here in the UK it has green hues). Love the way you've covered the TTT topic!

    1. Oh, interesting! For some reason I thought the U.K. cover was the blue one and the U.S. cover was going to be green. I must have had them backwards! In any case, I much prefer the blue one, though I always wonder why they feel the need to change random little things like that between editions?

I couldn't resist check out the alternate covers of "The Snow Child" after reading this! I'm partial to the U.S. one (being from Colorado I have a thing for aspen trees) but I do like the blue cover too! (I love the fox on both of them!)

  12. I've seen Becky's book around the blogosphere but don't know much about it. However that cover IS indeed gorgeous. Love that you featured book covers especially as a "cover snob," I'm always looking at pretty book covers. :)

    1. It's funny you mention that -- I sometimes do cover battles on the blog and I have one scheduled for next week about "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet." That's the U.K. cover and I love it, but the U.S. cover looks completely different (and not to my taste).

I'm a huge cover snob too... I know it's probably kept me from discovering some good books, but I don't think it's ever going to change!
