Yarn Along: "The Mistletoe Inn" and Owl Puffs

Yarn Along is a wonderful link-up -- hosted by the Small Things blog every Wednesday -- about two of the best things in life: reading and knitting!

Reading: Richard Paul Evans' latest Christmas novel, "The Mistletoe Inn." It's hardly award-winning literature, but it's short, easy and festive -- just right for this time of year. Since last week's Yarn Along I finished "The Great Christmas Knit-Off" by Alexandra Brown (surprisingly good), "Between the World and Me" by Ta-Nehisi Coates (a thought-provoking look at race), and "Saga" volume 2 (just as weird and addicting as volume 1). I'm thinking I might try to squeeze in one more holiday book before Christmas. Any recommendations?

Knitting: I'm cheating a bit here; I finished up the Slouchy Copy Cat Hat for my Bookish Secret Santa swap partner on Sunday and I haven't started a new project yet. So I'm featuring the cute little owls I made last winter. I gave most of them away, but these three stayed with us and they perch on our bookshelves most of the year and in our Christmas tree during December. They were so much fun to knit up, a perfect way to use up pretty pieces of scrap yarn, and endlessly customizable. One of these days I'll make more of them. The pattern is Owl Puffs on Ravelry. (P.S. Have you seen the clearance sheep t-shirts on Ravelry with the slight misprint? They're so cute, and I'm pretty sure I need one!)

    1. Thanks, Andrea! They were so fun to make. I intended to make scarves for all the owls and the ones I gave away DID have scarves, but I got lazy and those two guys ended up naked!

    1. Haha, I know the feeling! But you can save this one for when you have some yarn odds and ends to use up! :)

  4. OH my gosh, I'm going to die of cuteness! I luff the owlses!

I usually do my "light" reading around February when I just can't stand another month of winter - and they're usually my old favorites like books by Miss Read.

    1. Ugh, February. I definitely need a pick-me-up by that point in winter! Here in Ohio the sky is gray ev-er-y day seemingly for months! It's nice to have a literary escape.

    1. I'm glad you still like it! I perched mine in our Christmas tree this year. Where do you have yours?

  7. Thanks for the Christmas book recommendations. I read The Christmas Box years ago. Not amazing, but seasonally festive at least. There is a wonderful Christmas music CD by Paul Cardall that goes along with it. That is quite nice. Such cute owls!

    1. I agree, "The Mistletoe Inn" was an ok holiday read, but I didn't love it. I do recommend "The Great Christmas Knit-Off," though. It was a totally different type of Christmas novel. The writing was still just-alright, but I liked the story and characters a lot better. Plus, there's knitting!

    1. They're super-easy, Alina, and so fun to customize! It's easy to change the shape of them to make some a little more pudgy and others taller. And of course decorating them is the best part! :)

  9. Your owls are adorable!

I didn't know Richard Paul Evans had a new book! I love his books. Will have to request it at our library!

    1. Thanks, Deborah! I didn't end up LOVING the book, but it wasn't bad. You really can't go wrong with anything that has "Christmas" in the title this time of year.
