2017 New Year's Goals

Goodbye 2016, hello 2017! Normally I'm a bit nostalgic as December comes to a close and January heralds the start of another year, but some parts of 2016 were pretty rough and for once I was thrilled to take down my old calendar and put up a new one. Here's to a fresh, crisp, blank-page year! And with a sparkling new year comes the opportunity for new adventures, new memories and new goals. Here are mine:

Before I list my goals for 2017, let's see how I did with my 5 goals for 2016:

1. Try really, really hard to read some/most/ALL of these 25 popular books. Nope. I only read 10.

2. Start using my calcium bentonite clay face mask regularly. Eh... yes and no. I was doing well there for a while but I haven't done it in probably two months now!

3. Buy a swimsuit I actually like and feel good in. I did buy a swimsuit -- a black skirt-y type thing and two tops -- though I definitely wouldn't say I feel fantastic wearing it. However, swimsuits in Hawaii are just a fact of life (if I ever want to go snorkeling or boogie boarding!) so I'll just have to get over it.

4. Finally learn the long-tail cast-on for knitting. Fail.

5. Get better about posting travel pictures to the blog. Not really. I did a whole bunch of posts about our 2015 travels but I still haven't even posted about our trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter last February. Sigh.

1. Find some new and exciting things to do in Hawaii!
This is our second time being stationed in Hawaii and, as much as I loved it the first time around, I really didn't want to spend another three years living here. Part of the reason I wasn't thrilled about the assignment is that we did all the touristy things while we were here last time, and if I'm going to spend three years so far away from my family (plus miss out on career opportunities, craft stores and road trips), I'd rather live somewhere new -- like England or Germany or Alaska -- so all our exciting adventures would sort of balance it out. So I'm hoping we can discover some fun new experiences in Hawaii this year, stuff we didn't do last time that'll make me feel happy to live in "paradise" again.

2. Do something about my weight.
I don't like to talk about stuff like this on the blog, but this is a goals post so here goes. I've gained a lot of weight (about 40 pounds) in the last couple years after maintaining a healthy weight for my whole life. Because of some other problems I've been having plus a family history of thyroid issues, I really thought I might have a thyroid thing going on. But the doctor doesn't seem to think so... which means it's time for me to either make peace with my new body shape ("fat" chance of that!) or get serious about working out. Too, if I can actually keep to a consistent workout schedule and still continue to put on weight, I can go back to the doctor about it without feeling like an idiot.

3. Take up a new hobby.
I need something fresh and new in my life. Maybe I'll dust off my sewing machine and really figure out how to use it. Or learn to play the piano. Or get scuba certified. Or start writing a novel. Or take my baking or photography skills to the next level. Or, hell, maybe I'll discover that I actually like working out and run my first 5K. We'll see what the new year brings!

4. Read more...
...non-fiction, graphic novels, my own books, books in series I'm partway through. And stop waiting until the last minute to read ARCs.

  2. These are great goals! I love the idea of finding a new hobby - reading is great, but I like to try new things. And I'm totally with you on the weight issue. I've been yo-yoing for a few years now, and it is a struggle.

  3. LOVE the idea of picking up a new hobby as a resolution! As long as it's a hobby you really like, of course ... I tried to pick up scrapbooking once upon a time and that's just not for me, no matter how much I admire others' scrapbooks!
