Jarrod and I are about to become an aunt and uncle for the first time, and yesterday I finished up the wee baby hat I was knitting for our new niece. The yarn is from a little shop on Kauai and it makes me think of plumeria flowers and sunsets. I'm not a huge fan of variegated yarn (though the colors in this one are irresistible), so I thought I'd try to break it up a bit with the purl ridges. In retrospect, I wish I'd have just stuck with stockinette stitch, and I also should've started the decreases a row later so they didn't pull on that purl section. But I don't think you'll really see that when it's stretched out on the baby's head. That
is one benefit to the purl rows -- they made the hat stretchier so hopefully it'll fit on the baby's head for a little longer.
Next up on my needles: finally Kitchenering together my "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" MKAL cowl, and then casting on for a Newt Scamander Hufflepuff scarf for a friend.
I'm about 100 pages into "The Fire by Night" by Teresa Messineo (out next Tuesday) and I'm really enjoying it. It's a novel about two best friends, both WWII nurses. One is stationed in Europe and the other in Hawaii and then on Corregidor in the Phillipines (and then on to a Japanese POW camp). Both woman are complex characters who admirably face horrific events, and I like that the book is set both in Europe and the Pacific. So far, I'd say it's definitely worth checking out if you like historical fiction!

Great that you are reading a book where one nurse is stationed in Hawaii. Are you recognizing any of the locales or things mentioned? The cap is too adorable and I really like the colors as well. I'm envious of your talent as it's always something I wished I had learned.
