Yarn Along is a wonderful link-up -- hosted by the Small Things blog every Wednesday -- about two of the best things in life: reading and knitting!
Reading: My first read of 2016, "Furiously Happy" by Jenny Lawson, was an awesome 5-star book that everyone should read. Any book with a maniacally happy taxidermied raccoon on the front is bound to be good, and it made me laugh out loud while also educating me on mental illness, what it's like, and the stigma surrounding it.
My second book, "What She Knew" by Gilly Macmillian, was a bit of a disappointment. I just finished it last night and I wasn't too impressed with this purported psychological thriller, which dares to compare itself to "The Girl on the Train." It was really more of a straight mystery, without the usual twists, turns, lies and unreliable narrators of a good mind-bending thriller. There was some other stuff that bothered me about it too, but one of my favorite bloggers gave it 4 stars, so maybe it just wasn't for me.
Today I'm going to start "Fifteen Dogs" by Andre Alexis, wherein Hermes and Apollo make a bet that involves granting a group of dogs human intelligence.
Knitting: I'm making good progress on the mermaid tail blanket a friend asked me to knit for her 2-year-old daughter. The body section is supposed to be 37 inches long and I'm currently at 13.5 inches, so I'm over a third of the way there! I just love that the blanket is good TV knitting -- it's helping me get some shows off the DVR, and I've been knitting while Jarrod and I binge-watch "Orphan Black."

Thanks for the note on Jenny Lawson. I used to read her blog a lot way back but kind of fell, off it for some reason. I remember her being talented funny.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I've never actually read her blog! But both "Let's Pretend This Never Happened" and "Furiously Happy" were hilarious. You should check them out! "Let's Pretend" is mostly funny, crazy, weird anecdotes, and "Furiously Happy" is a little more serious but it still had me laughing.
DeleteTV knitting is my favorite! It's such a great way to clear out the DVR for sure. I added Furiously Happy to my Goodreads. How could I not with that cover?
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it! The cover just cracks me up -- AND there's a story about the raccoon inside!
DeleteI love Jenny Lawson and am glad you enjoyed her new book. I can't wait to listen to it. I'm sorry to here What She Knew was disappointing for you. I am still looking forward to reading it--but I'll try to keep my expectations realistic. Hopefully you will like Fifteen dogs more.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the mermaid tail is coming along nicely! My daughter tries to walk in hers, I don't think she understands how to use it despite my attempts to explain it to her. LOL
I bet every kid tries to walk in the tail blanket -- who would want to take it off?! ;)
DeleteI really hope you like "What She Knew." I know I'm in the minority. Definitely don't read my review before you read the book -- I would hate to skew your opinion!
Those mermaid tails are so sweet - you are a very good friend indeed ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Caroline! :) I know I would've wanted one of those blankets as a kid!
